Q & A with Jamie Peck
Name: Jamie Peck
Major: Welding, Missoula College
Scholarship: $1,000 Scholarship
Tell me about the scholarship you received.
I had gone to the [Missoula College] west campus to talk to my advisor, Mickey. During our conversation she told me about the scholarship, and then helped me fill out an application. (She is such a sweetheart and has been a huge help throughout this entire process.) Then, a couple of months later, I got an email saying I’d won it. It was a really pleasant surprise.
How has the scholarship impacted your education?
Just being able to afford school a little more is a huge help. I also work full time, so this scholarship takes a lot of pressure off. If I need to take time off work for school, I’m not freaking out because of a need to support myself. Additionally, with that extra money flow, I was able to buy better equipment. That was a godsend throughout my first semester.
How has the scholarship impacted your life?
I’m a lot less stressed. Money’s been a big factor for me, since I’m supporting myself through school. And now I’m not pulling out my hair with every single penny that I spend.
Why do you feel it’s important for donors to support students receiving technical degrees?
I think it’s super important. It seems a lot of kids in my generation are kind of forced to go to school for a degree, but they most often end up serving coffee. With more money flow and support going towards those programs, I think people will be more inclined to learn a trade.
How does a gift like this inspire you going forward?
Just knowing that there is support and the possibility for additional support is motivating. It really pushes you.
